Structure fire at North being investigated as possible arson

A structure fire on Friday evening in the 400 block of Plantation Road at North is being investigated as a burglary and arson, and a reward is being offered. According to a press release from Major Patric Graham of the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the scene along with Mathews Volunteer Fire Department at around 8:20 p.m. Fire personnel arrived on the scene and quickly extinguished the fire. There were no injuries. Deputies discovered that forced entry had been made to the home by someone other than fire personnel and that the home had been ransacked, said the release. Criminal investigators with the sheriff’s office responded to the scene, assisted by an arson specialist with the Virginia State Police Bureau of Investigation. They processed the scene and collected evidence. The sheriff’s office is asking that residents in the area and businesses along Route 14 review their surveillance footage for anything suspicious.
