MMF volunteer work continues through winter

Work has continued through the winter months at the Mathews Maritime Foundation’s Gwynn’s Island Boat Shop by a steady cast of volunteers with varying levels of boating and boatbuilding experience. Leading the group is Pete Hall, who has maintained and repaired boats at Ginney Point and Mobjack Bay marinas. Additional Saturday morning regular volunteers include Phil Mutton, Carolyn August, Dennis Crawford, John Bonner, Bob Buhl, David Machen and Mike Moore. The foundation noted an ongoing need for those interested in larger watercraft to help out with the continual maintenance and restoration of buyboat “Peggy” and steel yacht “Freya.” Plans are being made to bring Freya ashore and set up by the shop to carry out a major refit and restoration project. Hall would also like to see an expansion of efforts in the boat shop to possibly include the construction of a 24-foot boat alongside a 15-footer.Additional volunteers are welcomed at Gwynn’s Island Boat Shop.
