97 anglers take part in Rotary Rockfish Tournament

Last weekend’s Mathews Rotary Club Rockfish Tournament netted over $10,000 in support for the club, with more than $3,800 going to its general fund.

The club held a two-day tournament Saturday and Sunday, giving anglers the option to fish one or both days for the same entry fee and their chance to win some of the $4,000 in guaranteed prize money.

“Due to Saturday’s weather forecast we lost a few entrants, but 97 hardy anglers registered to fish on 26 boats that entered the tournament,” said organizer David Fitch. “It was a rough day on the water Saturday and only four boats brought back fish to weigh, with the heaviest being 37.5 pounds. Sunday’s weather was much better, but again only four boats brought in four fish to weigh.”
