94 graduate from Mathews High

Although the Mathews High School 73rd annual commencement ceremony started off with a slight technical glitch—a non-working microphone—the soon-to-be graduates, faculty and audience took it all in stride, and the rest of Saturday afternoon’s graduation went off without another hitch as 94 young men and women received their diplomas.

After the processional and National Anthem, class president Haley Kujawski began her welcoming comments, but soon found that the cordless microphone wasn’t working.

Family and friends gathered in the school’s Harry M. Ward Auditorium didn’t seem to mind the delay, with someone shouting "Do a cheer, Haley" to the former Blue Devil cheerleader. Soon after, band teacher Wayne Fillingim arrived on stage with another microphone and the program continued.

"When we leave here today, we are going to go our separate ways," Kujawski said, "but we all need to let the world know that the Class of 2012...
