9 apply for school board vacancy

Nine candidates have offered their names for consideration to fill the interim vacancy on the Mathews County School Board left by the resignation of member Jeanice Sadler.

A special meeting/public hearing on the appointment will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Mathews High School media center.

Sadler, who won a second term on the school board in 2019, announced in October that she was stepping down from the board because she is moving out of the area. The interim appointment will be for one year (Jan. 1, 2022 to Dec. 31, 2022)—a special election will be held next November to fill the remainder of Sadler’s term of office.

Among the residents who have expressed an interest in the interim appointment are two candidates who ran for election in the Nov. 2 election—Lorraine Forrest and Samantha Morgan. In that election, Linda Hodges and Bobby Dobson won four-year seats on the board.
