The 9/11 25th Anniversary Memorial Run will be held on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 5, starting at Mathews High School. The event is a fundraiser for the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Gates open at 8 a.m., with the ceremony beginning at 8:15, including a performance of the National Anthem by the MHS Marching Blue Devils, who will also be selling breakfast sandwiches that morning. A moment of silence will be held at 8:46 a.m. (the time on Sept. 11, 2001 that American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center). An airhorn start will begin the 3.1-mile race at 8:47 a.m. Medals will be awarded to the winners. Registration closes on Saturday. Anyone living along the route (Lovers Lane/Pine Hall loop) is encouraged to display their American flags for this event.
