84 artists’ works to be in juried show

Works by 84 artists have been selected for inclusion in the Arts Speaks Annual Juried Show, to be held April 27 through May 27 in the Art Speaks Gallery at the Bay School Community Arts Center in Mathews.

One hundred twenty-nine artists from across Virginia applied for the show. Of those accepted, 29 are participating in the Art Speaks Exhibition for the first time. Over the last seven years, this show has included the works of 283 Virginia artists, said a press release.

Juror and Judge Janly Jaggard selected the 86 works for exhibition from 320 entries, said the release. The show will include 69 two-dimensional pieces and 15 three-dimensional pieces. Prizes totaling $5,000, with $1,500 for Best in Show, will be awarded to the winning artists.

Artists selected represent all areas of the state, said the release, including Northern Virginia, Southwest Virginia, the Piedmont Region, Richmond, the Historic Triangle, Hampton Roads, the Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula. Mathews artists selected to participate in the show are Mary Claire Coster, Karen Podd, Martha Anne King, Lois Biddison, Jan Finn-Duffy, Phil Dunn, Gary Edmondson, Sam Forrest and George Chung. Selected artists from Gloucester are Katherine Doyle, Susan Drew Hayhurst, Carolyn Dudley, George Cramer and Susan Whitfield.

The show will open with a reception at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the Bay School. The public is invited to attend the show and the opening reception, which will feature an appetizer buffet. The exhibition and reception are hosted by the Bay School and a committee of volunteers, and supported by the Art Speaks Gallery sponsors.

The Bay School, a nonprofit community art school and gallery, is located at 279 Main Street, Mathews, and is supported in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Dominion Energy, Mathews County, and Chesapeake Bank.
