8 GHS wrestlers to compete in state tourney

Gloucester High School will be sending eight wrestlers to the VHSL state championships on Feb. 18-19 following the team’s performance at regionals last weekend at Nansemond River High School. To qualify for states, a wrestler had to place in the top four of his or her weight class.

Two Gloucester wrestlers won regional titles. Josh Seaton took first place at 170 lbs. and Ethan Baker came in first at 182 lbs.

The Dukes also had two wrestlers placing second—Ty Baker (120 lbs.) and heavyweight Adam Eckstein. Joey Folly (195 lbs.) finished in third place, while Clayton Smith (132 lbs.), Kevin Phillips (152 lbs.) and Christian Duke (160 lbs.) all placed fourth in the regional competition.

Nick Guzzardo finished in fifth place in the 145 lbs. weight class and qualified as an alternate. At regionals, the Gloucester wrestling team as a whole placed third.
