700 athletes expected to come to GHS track championships

Gloucester High School will host the 2016 Virginia High School League Group 5A South Regional Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at the GHS Sports Complex. 

GHS head track coach John Perrin expects 29 teams and about 700 athletes to compete in the event, including top athletes from the Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Richmond areas. The athletes will be vying for bids to the VHSL Group 5A State Meet scheduled for June 3 and 4 at Todd Stadium in Newport News.

The regional meet opens with track and field events beginning at 1 p.m. and continuing Saturday morning with a 9 o’clock start. The opening ceremonies are slated for 11:50 Saturday, followed by finals beginning at noon. The awards presentation is set for 3:45 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $8 per person each day.
