70+ children take part in costume parade

A Costume Trick-or-Treat Parade held Saturday in downtown Mathews was a hit with young and old. More than 70 children participated, many accompanied by parents.

Sponsored by Mathews Memorial Library and Mathews Main Street Committee, the parade was followed by the "Haunt Your Library" party, where prizes were awarded and refreshments served.

Local merchants participated in the "best window display" contest, with the prize going to Doodlebugs consignment shop.

Also enhancing the festive occasion was a pumpkin-carving contest, with prizes awarded in several categories. Winners were: Scariest—first, Ray Hudgins; second, Adelle Hudgins; Most Creative—first Nancy Miller; second, Jonathan Hogge; Most Artistic—first, Christy Sharpe and family; second, LaSeandra Ramsey; and Funniest—first, Daniel Hogge; second, Vivian Hogge.
