Seven Gloucester High School varsity field hockey players were chosen for VHSL 2021 All State Field Hockey Teams during the final awards meeting among state tournament coaches.
All State First Team selections were junior Channy Johnson and senior Alexis Adams. Johnson led the team in scoring with 31 goals and 20 assists and eclipsed the 150-point mark for her high school career.
Adams is a no-nonsense defender who leaves her heart on the field with passion. She finished her high school career with 16 goals and 124 assists and will continue playing at Longwood University next fall.
All State Second Team selections included freshman Reese Miller, sophomores Kamryn McDonough and Avery Watkins, junior Kareena Ferguson and senior Aubree Dorsey.
Miller tallied 17 goals and nine assists. Dorsey led the team in the midfield with 15 goals and 13 assists and finished her high school career with 36 goals and 36 assists. She will continue her field hockey career at Converse College in South Carolina.
McDonough tallied 11 assists on the season and played the strong side of the offensive midfield with precision and accuracy. Watkins was a shutdown defender against the region’s best right forwards and did not allow one right forward to score or assist on any of the three goals the Dukes gave up. Her save percentage was above .900 regardless of how many shots the opponent took.
The Gloucester team as a whole has been recognized with 47 post-season awards and will return five all-state players and 11 all-region players for next season. The team will celebrate their successful season on Sunday at the varsity team banquet hosted by Petsworth Baptist Church.
