60+ vessels compete in Governor’s Cup Regatta

More than 60 vessels were launched into the Ware River for Ware River Yacht Club’s 52nd annual Governor’s Cup Regatta, held on Saturday and Sunday. Participants from Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina traveled to the scenic Ware Neck venue, all vying to take home the Virginia Governor’s Cup title.

Barney Harris and Matt Rhodes drew from more than 40 combined years of experience on their way to a win in the Albacore group with a score of seven. This group had the most boats making starts meaning that Harris and Rhodes, who had never sailed together before this regatta, took home the Governor’s Cup title.

The sailor(s) who placed first in the class with the most boats making starts is the winner of the Governor’s Cup. With a scoring system reminiscent of golf, the sailor or crew with the lowest total score would secure a victory in their class.
