$500,000 prize winner

As Katherine Byrd sat in her car scratching a $500,000 Ca$h Cha$er ticket from the Virginia Lottery, she said to herself, “Oh, I don’t think I’m going to win anything.” Was she ever wrong! The Gloucester woman was the game’s top prize winner, buying the $500,000 ticket at a Food Lion on Hampton Boulevard in Norfolk. $500,000 Ca$h Cha$er is one of dozens of scratcher games sold by the Virginia Lottery, featuring prizes ranging from $10 up to that $500,000 top prize. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 652,800. Byrd’s was the first top prize claimed, which means that two more remain unclaimed. Byrd said she intends to pay off her student loans and get ready for her October wedding, according to a Virginia Lottery release.
