30+ paddlers take part in Beaverdam Canoe Jam

The 19th annual Beaverdam Canoe Jam was held on Saturday at the Gloucester park. More than 30 paddlers participated in the event in spite of the heat. Fortunately, the humidity was down and there was a breeze on the water, race director Karla Havens said.

Twenty-six canoeists and kayakers paddled the Long Course (four miles) and the Short Course (two miles), and many paddlers competed in both races.

The largest class was the two-person Adult and Child Recreational Canoe Short Course with 16 paddlers in eight boats. There were 24 paddlers in the Four-Person Fun Canoe Race this year, in which “much splashing and banging of boats takes place,” said Havens.

All competitors and volunteers received T-shirts and complimentary items supplied by area merchants, said the release. In addition, local merchants supplied door prizes to all participants.
