3 GHS athletes advance to state track meet

Three Gloucester High School athletes advanced to the Class 5 Indoor State Track and Field Meet with their performances in the Class 5A Regional Meet held on Friday and Saturday at the Boo Williams SportsPlex in Hampton.

GHS junior Joshua Shackelford won the regional championship in the 1600 meter race in 4:37.23 and is headed to the state meet. Sophomore Alyssa Lass was the runner-up in the girls’ 1600, placing second in 5:37.52 and also advancing to the state meet.

Additionally headed to the state event is sophomore Ainsley Miller who was the regional runner-up in the pole vault. Miller cleared nine feet to get to the state meet, which will be held Feb. 23 and 24 at Boo Williams. 

Also at the regional meet, junior Joseph Conroy was fifth in the shot put with a personal record toss of 40’2.5” and Tim Weldon was seventh with 39’4”.
