2017 AVFR fund drive raises $42,000+

The Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Inc., raised $42,350.30 of its $100,000 2017 fund drive goal by Monday, squad spokesman Robert Parlett said.

The most recent report showed donations from 397 individuals and 24 businesses, Parlett said, with six donations made through PayPal.

The fund drive began a little earlier this year, he said, as the squad mailed out solicitation letters to lower Gloucester residents and businesses in early November. The squad met its $100,000 goal last year, Parlett said, but it took the regular winter fund drive plus gifts throughout the year in honor or in memory of loved ones to match the goal.

The last fund drive helped the squad purchase a new ambulance. Parlett said Gloucester County covered $200,000 of the cost of the vehicle, with the fund drive picking up $28,000. The new four-wheel unit will replace a nine-year-old truck, with equipment from the older unit being used to stock the new ambulance.
