Mathews County celebrated its 200th birthday on May 1, 1991, in a big way, including a birthday party that featured cake after cake for the crowd that gathered on the Mathews High School football field. Slicing up some of the confections, from left, were Irene Tyler, Judy Smith, Bert Case and Sally Hunley, all members of the Central Village Homemakers Club. SOUR CREAM CAKEJessie Ann Diggs 1 c. butter3 c. sugar6 eggsCream together and add:1 c. sour cream Mix together and add to creamed mixture:3 c. flour¼ tsp. baking powder¼ tsp. soda¼ tsp. salt Mix well and add:3 tsp. flavoring, 1 each of vanilla, lemon and almond Place in a well-greased 13”x9”x2” pan.
