2 Gloucester cell towers to get upgrades

Velocitel, a subcontractor for AT&T, announced Monday plans to upgrade cell communications antennas at two Gloucester County locations.

Brandie Webster, a spokesperson for Velocitel, said that new antennas are scheduled to be placed on towers on Crockett Lane and Indian Road by late December. Construction should take about one week at each location, she said

Three antennas and a radio head, which allows technicians to reposition antenna angles from the ground without climbing, are scheduled to be installed at each location, replacing existing equipment.

The enhancements will not affect the tower structure or height, according to an application filed with the Gloucester County Department of Planning and Zoning.

Webster said that “drive tests” of Gloucester measured traffic, data, and dropped calls and found those two sites needed antenna upgrades. Cost will be $22,000 at each site.
