1A/1B Super Regional wrestling tournament postponed

Wrestlers from Cumberland, Rappahannock County, Franklin and Riverheads had been scheduled to face off against Mathews High School grapplers yesterday at MHS in the Region 1A/1B Super Regional Tournament. However, that event has been postponed due to a forecast of inclement weather.

Late Tuesday afternoon, MHS principal Drew Greve announced that “due to dangerous weather that will be all over Virginia beginning tomorrow afternoon and continuing at least until Saturday noon” the tournament has been postponed. As of press time, it was unclear when the rescheduled event would be held. “Makeup for this tournament will be Sunday, 2/14 at the earliest onward, and that is dependent upon the VHSL extending the deadline for winter sports,” Greve said in an email to the region’s athletic directors.

Mathews wrestlers who qualify at the 1A/1B tournament will go on to the VHSL Class 1 state championship, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Salem Civic Center.
