191 participate in Gloucester cakewalk

Rain dampened Gloucester but did not dampen spirits at an attempt to break the record for largest cakewalk on Saturday. Nearly 200 people were on hand and, though the record of 280 was not broken, thousands of dollars were raised for a proposed all-accessible playground at Woodville Park.

The 191 participants vied for one of 100 cakes as well as handmade quilts, apparel, gift baskets and other raffle prizes. The Botetourt gymnasium served as the foul-weather venue, with participants walking to music along a series of numbers placed on the floor until the music stopped and numbers were called.

To assist in the proceedings, Alice Cooke, a former winner of Food Network’s “Cake Wars,” was on hand to serve as a guest MC. Cooke is the owner of Cake-A-Licious in Williamsburg.

Though the attempt fell short of the record, it brought Gloucester Parks, Recreation and Tourism several thousand dollars closer to its $250,000 funding goal.
