190+ attend Democrats’ seafood dinner

The Gloucester County Democratic Committee held its annual Seafood Dinner and Fundraiser on Sept. 18 at the Abingdon Ruritan Club in Bena, with over 190 people in attendance.

Pam Garner, chair of the committee, was the emcee, opening the program with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by singing of the National Anthem, led by Margaret Jones. Highlights of the evening included the seafood dinner by Shelly Williams Catering and music by the Gloucester classic rock band Joey & The Jammers, said a press release. The Silent Auction, the major fundraiser for the Gloucester Democratic Committee, offered over 60 items for bidding.

Roberta “Bobby” Ray was presented with the annual Eldridge N. Cook Impact Award, which recognizes an individual who has been a positive and ongoing influence on the Gloucester community. Ray’s life has been defined by compassion, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to others, said the release, adding that she has spent decades serving Gloucester County through civic engagement, mentorship, and tireless volunteerism. Kevin Hart, representative of Eldridge Cook’s family, presented the award.

A $1,000 Impact Scholarship Award, given annually in honor of Cook to a Gloucester High School student furthering their career in academics or in the trades, went to Armani Billups, now majoring in business at the College of William and Mary.

Those attending viewed an inspirational video message from U.S. Senator Tim Kaine, said the release, followed by greetings and a lively keynote address by special guest Senator Lamont Bagby, chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia.

Dianne Carter de Mayo, chair of the First Congressional District Democratic Committee, introduced the district’s candidates for Virginia House of Delegates: Elaine Walters for District 68 and Dr. Mark Downey for District 69. Representatives from the gubernatorial campaign and Democratic Primary candidates shared additional information, said the release. The evening ended with announcement about the early voting, which was to begin the next day.
