1772 muster of Yorktown Militia commemorated Saturday

Yorktown begins its observance this weekend of the nation’s 250th anniversary activities.

The 1772 muster of the Yorktown Militia will be commemorated Saturday. Events at York Hall, 301 Main Street, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will include a militia muster and craft fair, in addition to the following activities: sea shanties at 10:30 and 2:30, militia drill at 11 and 2, storyteller at 11:30 and 1:30, sermon by a reenactor of the Rev. John Allen at 12:30, and dance at 1.

The Rev. Mr. Allen preached a sermon in 1772 in Boston which utilized the Gaspee Affair to warn listeners about greedy monarchs, corrupt judges and conspiracies in the London government.

A lecture on the Gaspee Affair will be held at 3 p.m. More information can be found at visityorktown.org.
