Fifty-one swimmers completed the seventh annual L. Wayne Hudgins Memorial Wharf to Wharf Swim on Sunday, an event that raised in excess of $13,000 for the Mathews Land Conservancy’s boathouse project.

The swim started at Williams Wharf on the East River. At 1 p.m., swimmers entered the river in two waves: those swimming for serious times and the others swimming for fun.

Tucker Witt, swimming with no aids, finished the 1,400-meter course in 18:47. Using fins, Terry Johnson came in in 18:18. Zach Sauter, Peter Wilcox and Charlie Ober finished out the top five.

The course, just short of one mile, took swimmers across the river to the point where Hicks Wharf was once located, and back. Hicks and Williams were both stops for steamboats that visited daily from Norfolk.

Race spokesman Mimi Ulsaker, who also swam, said swimmers received pledges to take part, and that the $13,000 raised so far should go higher, as pledges continue to trickle in.
