104 expected to graduate from MHS

Valedictorian Maria Shea Spadaccini and salutatorian Stacey Fiona Abernathy will lead a class of 104 students during Saturday’s graduation ceremony at Mathews High School.

Commencement exercises begin at 2 p.m. in the school’s Harry M. Ward Auditorium. The school’s gym will hold the overflow crowd, who will be able to view the program on closed-circuit TV.

The program will begin with performances of “Pomp and Circumstance” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” by the MHS Symphonic Band led by Courtney Bohn.

Senior class president Brian Owens will welcome parents and other guests and present the class gift. Superintendent of Schools Nancy Welch will introduce the elected officials and other special guests.

MHS assistant principal Alexis Foster will introduce the salutatorian, who will speak. Abernathy, who achieved a grade point average of 4.34, will attend Old Dominion University in the fall. She is the daughter of Cynthia Abernathy of Mathews and...
