100 years and more celebrated at Sanders

Two Gloucester residents celebrated true milestones in their lives last week. Both residents of Sanders Assisted Living, Ray Hooker celebrated his 106th birthday last Tuesday and Elsie Bright turned 100 last Thursday. Celebrations were held at Sanders for both residents, which included plenty of cake, fun, friends and family.

Bright, born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1912, grew up there and went to school there. She was also an active member of Oklahoma Church of the Brethren. She married and raised her children in Ohio before moving with her husband to Winston-Salem, N.C., for his work.

After living in North Carolina for about 45 years, Bright decided to move to Gloucester to be closer to her daughter.

She said she didn’t want to speculate on the secret to her longevity, but said, "I figured when the Lord’s ready for me, He’ll take me. He has a reason for me being here."
