$1.6M raised so far for new YMCA building

Dick Phillips, capital campaign committee chair for the Mathews Family YMCA, reminded the county board of supervisors during its June 23 meeting that the Y is still seeking the county’s support for the new 17,000 square foot facility planned for its Hudgins site on Cricket Hill Road.

Phillips pointed out that the YMCA serves as the county’s parks and recreation and that “it’s truly a community building.”

The Y has asked that the county contribute $300,000 toward the new facility, perhaps in annual installments over the next five years, in order to help move the project along.

Phillips said that in the past few months, the Y has raised $200,000 toward construction of the new building, including a $30,000 grant from the Gwathmey Foundation, a $50,000 grant from the Mathews Industrial Development Authority, a $30,000 grant from the Mathews Community Foundation, $35,000 that represents half of a grant from a Richmond organization that will also provide $35,...
