Whitmore sentenced to five years in shooting death

A 23-year-old Newport News man was sentenced last week to serve five years in the state penitentiary for the shooting death last May of Mathews resident Steven Allen Eary, 61.

Chad Whitmore received three concurrent five-year terms during a sentencing hearing Wednesday in Mathews Circuit Court.

Last September, Judge Jeffrey W. Shaw convicted Whitmore of one count each of manslaughter, shoot/stab in the commission of a felony, and unlawful wounding.

On Wednesday, Shaw pronounced the sentence after hearing testimony from the defendant and two character witnesses, as well as arguments by Mathews Commonwealth’s Attorney Tom Bowen and Whitmore’s defense attorney Ronald Smith.

Whitmore was calm and collected when he took the stand to testify for himself.
