Middlesex inmate dies in suspected overdose

A Middlesex County resident serving time in the Haynesville Correctional Center died on June 15 as a result of a suspected overdose in the Northern Neck prison. Seven additional prisoners believed to have suffered overdoses were sent to local hospitals.

Steven L. Anderson was pronounced dead at 8:32 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. The overdoses were discovered around 7:15 p.m. that day, according to a release from the Virginia Department of Corrections.

The investigation is ongoing as to what the suspected drug was and how it was introduced into the facility.

Six of the seven other offenders were released from Riverside Tappahannock Hospital and Rappahannock General Hospital on Sunday, June 16 and the last offender was released from Riverside Tappahannock Hospital early Tuesday morning, June 18.
