MHS girls beat Tigers, fall to LHS

The Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team split a pair of games this week, defeating King and Queen in front of a home crowd on Friday, 38-29, and falling on the road to Lancaster, 48-29. Abbie Hudgins led the way for Mathews in Friday’s King and Queen game. She scored 22 points, pulled down 13 rebounds, made seven steals and two blocks in the win. Joice Small added 11 rebounds and two blocks. Connie Johnson had six assists, seven steals and three blocks, Stacie Thomas added eight points, three rebounds, three assists, and four steals and Sarah Ashbaugh finished with 10 rebounds in her second game up from junior varsity. The JV Lady Devils, meanwhile, posted a 43-19 victory over Lancaster on Monday. With that win, the JV girls are 16-2 on the season. The MHS JV and varsity girls were scheduled to host Charles City last night. On Friday, the Mathews girls have another home contest against the King William Cavaliers.
