MHS advances to state in Scholastic Bowl

While the majority of Mathews High School rang with shouts and cheers for the wrestlers competing in their regional tournament, not far away parents in another part of the school sat tense in forced silence at the Region A Scholastic Bowl Tournament.

The day would have its lows and highs for the Mathews team; the low came early in the day with President Clinton and the high came several hours later with Jay-Z.

The Mathews High School Scholastic Bowl team ended up placing second at Saturday’s Region A competition. After losing the first round to Northumberland, Mathews bounced back to win the next four straight before falling in the championship match.

With its second-place finish, the team will advance to the state competition, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the College of William and Mary.

With Windsor and Franklin cancelling early in the day due to inclement weather, Mathews had a first-round bye, having to wait until round two to face Northumberland High School. Bot...
