The Mathews High School varsity baseball team is peaking at the right time, riding a four-game win streak into post-season play. Last week the varsity Devils picked up wins over a pair of tough competitors, the Essex Trojans and West Point Pointers.

Last Wednesday, Mathews picked up an impressive 8-5 win over Essex on the road. Trailing 1-0, Mathews came roaring back with five runs in the top of the third to take control of the contest. Tyler Moore threw two solid innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out four. Patrick Blake earned the victory for the Devils throwing 2 2/3 innings, and Haden Higginbotham earned the save for Mathews.

The Devils tallied seven hits, with Christian Williams and Braden Hunley collecting two each.

The following day, the Devils were on the road again, this time facing the Pointers. The game was scoreless through four innings, but the pitchers’ duel came to an end in the top of the fifth when Blake hit a two-run double. Moore threw five shutout innings, giving up two hits, striking out seven, and walking one.
