The Mathews High School varsity tennis team held its Senior Night on the Lady Devils’ home courts last Wednesday against Middlesex, beating the Chargers by a 9-0 margin.

At number one singles, Avery Betz played Hannah Jackson in their first matchup of the season; Betz defeated Jackson by scores of 6-2, 6-3. In second-seed singles, Caroline Evans of Mathews dominated Middlesex’s Sierra Funk, winning 6-2, 6-0. Number three for Mathews Connie Johnson kept the winning going, beating Vivian Reinhardt, 6-0, 6-1.

Mathews’ number four singles player, Alex Mills, did not let her opponent, Virginia Reinhardt, score a single game on her and ended her match with a perfect 6-0, 6-0. At number five singles, Caroline Bray played Maddy Hurd and controlled the match with scores of 6-0, 6-1. For number six singles Middlesex did not have an eligible player because she was not yet in high school, so this was an automatic win for Mathews. Kylie Berry and Maddie Green played for practice due to the automatic forfeit, and Middlesex’s number six player won, 8-0, over Berry.
