The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team picked up a pair of victories this past week, beating the visiting Middlesex Chargers on Friday, 86-74, and pulling out a last-second victory over the Rappahannock Raiders on the road Monday night, 47-46.

The wins improved the Blue Devils’ record to 10-9 with three regular season games remaining.

The junior varsity Devils, meanwhile, split the two games; beating Middlesex and falling to Rappahannock.

Mathews completed its regular season sweep of its Tidewater District rivals from Middlesex on Friday. The Devils took a 12-point lead into halftime and, in spite of a rally that saw the Chargers close the gap to four points at the start of the fourth quarter, they held on for the win.

Caleb Thomas led the Devils in scoring with 28 points. Landon Green (18 points), Christian Williams (14), Nasir Thomas (six), Justin Ashberry (five), Mark Gary (four), Will Hutcheson and Brandon Gandee (two points each) and Tyrese Brooks (one point) provided the rest of the scoring.

Green and Caleb Thomas also led the team in rebounds, with eight each. Caleb Thomas had a team-high nine rebounds, while Williams contributed seven. Caleb Thomas also had four blocks on the night.

Defense was clearly an emphasis on Monday night, resulting in a low-scoring game against the Raiders. The first half ended with the Devils holding a nine-point lead, 22-13. A large run was sparked by the home team coming out of halftime. Mathews was held to only three points in the third quarter, struggling to finish shots near the rim. The Blue Devils found themselves down nine points fairly quickly.
