A pair of away matchups with Kecoughtan yielded two blowout results on Friday, as the Lady Dukes again defeated the Warriors and the Dukes boys’ team continued to struggle on the hardwood.

The Gloucester girls’ game tipped off at 5:30 and saw a tightly contested first quarter, but that would not hold. The Lady Dukes enjoyed a narrow 8-4 lead before erupting for a 14-4 run. They took that 14-point lead into half.

In the penultimate quarter, Kecoughtan added seven points to its total, but the Lady Dukes again scored in double digits to push the score to 35-15. As the final frame elapsed it became clear that the Lady Dukes defense came to play—the Warriors would not score double digits in any quarter of the contest.

Thanks to a 16-point effort from forward Lauren Hall and 13 more from guard Kenna Keyes, the Lady Dukes would go on to win, 49-28. Keyes has scored in double figures the last four games and has helped guide the young women of Gloucester basketball to two wins in their last three contests to bring the team’s season record to 6-10.

On the boys’ side, the Dukes came out flat and struggled to get anything going offensively. Kecoughtan bombarded Gloucester for the second time this year, this time winning 80-16.

The Gloucester boys will come home to play Denbigh on Friday. The Lady Dukes will be looking to pick up another opponent, as Denbigh is not fielding a girls’ varsity basketball team this season.
