“Celebrating Caleb,” a wellness initiative, is providing mini-grant funding to support health and wellness programs in Gloucester schools this fall. A total of $1,130 was provided to support the selected programs.

The initiative is named in memory of Caleb Chowning, a former Petsworth Elementary student who lost his struggle with osteosarcoma last year.

The programs selected for funding this fall are “Family Exercisers and Artful Appetizers” submitted by Margaret Watkins, Kim Robins and Cindy Thomas at Petsworth Elementary and “Go with the Flow” yoga submitted by Terumi LaGuardia at Botetourt Elementary.

Also, “Mindful Movement” calming techniques submitted by Susie Dunaway and Cassandra Kline at Peasley Middle School and “4-H Food Challenge” submitted by Krista Gustafson, Jackie Jefferies and Glenn Sturm at Page and Peasley middle schools in cooperation with the Gloucester Extension office.

In addition, the Bethel Running Club at Bethel Elementary received some support, requested by Tara Lord. The “Celebrating Caleb” program is facilitated by the Gloucester Department of Community Engagement.
