CARY LAWSON FRANKLIN

Cary Lawson Franklin of Gloucester, passed away July 31, 2019 at the age of 96 at the home of her daughter.  She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Warren Franklin.

She is survived by her son, George Warren Franklin; daughter, Beth Haskell, and two grandsons, Matthew and Warren Haskell. 

She was born and raised in Gloucester, graduating from Botetourt High School at the age of 16. She graduated from Madison College (JMU) with degrees in Home Economics and Social Studies.

She left Gloucester to travel to Maine to marry her husband before he shipped out to fight in WWII. After the war, they returned to Gloucester. She taught in the Gloucester School System for 15 years; also, was assistant principal for three years and acting principal for one year.  She was the first Director of the Head Start Program for Gloucester and Mathews counties.

In 1968, she left teaching and became a Gloucester County Extension Agent, where she worked until 1976.  At that time, she became the Middle Peninsula Planning District Agent with VA Tech.  She held this position until her retirement in 1979.

She was very active in her community. She was a charter member of the Historical Society, serving as Chairman.  As a member she also chaired the Gloucester Bicentennial Committee in 1976.

Member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving as President of the Women of the Church; member of The King’s Daughters, Gloucester Woman’s Club and the Chamber of Commerce; all of which she served as officer and committee chairman.

There will be a private service at a later date.
