For the first time, the Mathews Ruritan Club Christmas Blessing Fund will have a pair of honorary co-chairpersons, with Ron and Debbie Lambert serving in that post this year.

Solicitation letters will be mailed Monday for this year’s fund drive, according to Charles H. “Sonny” Richardson Jr., chairman of the club’s Christmas Blessing Fund. Since 1931, the Mathews Ruritan Club has sponsored this program which provides assistance for winter heating bills for Mathews County residents. Last year, 129 families received assistance.

The Lamberts purchased a home on the North River in 1998; they retired and moved to Mathews full-time in 2001. Ron and Debbie have both been active in several community organizations, but especially the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad. Ron has served on the Mathews Community Foundation Board, Mathews Rotary Club, PATH (People Aging in Their Homes) board, Hands Across Mathews volunteer, Meals on Wheels volunteer, Mathews Family YMCA board, American Legion Post 83 and Kingston Parish Men’s Class teacher.

Debbie is a retired Critical Care RN. She has served MVRS as an active member for 18 years. She was also active in Daughters of the American Revolution, Master Gardeners, coordinator for the Kingston Parish Snack Pack program, coordinator for PATH, Hands Across Mathews volunteer, Kingston Parish Altar Guild, President of the Mathews Garden Club, and Mathews Community Foundation board member.

Both were essential in the coordination of the Chili Cook-Off and MVRS in providing and placing 22 Automated External Defibrillators throughout Mathews County and training over 1,600 residents on how to use them in an emergency. “One of the things we love about Mathews is the way we all come together when we see a need,” Ron Lambert said.

“We are glad that our club can honor these two wonderful individuals who have spent so much time and energy providing service to our community,” Richardson said.

A goal of $20,000 has been set for this year’s campaign. The Blessing Fund is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are tax deductible. One hundred percent of the donations are distributed to needy families as all administrative duties are donated.

Checks should be made payable to “Christmas Blessing Fund” and sent to Mathews Ruritan Club, P.O. Box 74, Mathews, Va. 23109-0074. For more information, contact Ray Hunley at 804-384-7536 or cofreven@gmail.com.
