May Faire 2019 will be held Saturday, May 4, on and around the Mathews Court Green, and will take the theme “Salute to the Military,” announced chair Sandy Warhol.

Designated by the county board of supervisors as Mathews County’s Heritage 2019 Spring Festival, the day will honor Mathews men and women who served and now serve in the military, Warhol said.

May Faire will also celebrate Mathews County’s participation in each of the nation’s major military conflicts, she said.

In addition to vendors on the court green and a children’s area, special activities planned include:

—Recognition of the 100th anniversary year of the American Legion and of Post 83 in Mathews;

—Military displays and musical tributes from each of the service branches and conflicts;

—A Wall of Remembrance, with photographs of Mathews residents who served and now serve, at the new Mathews Historical Museum;

—The May Pole Dance, performed by members of the Bayside Youth Ballet;

—Crowning of the 2019 King and Queen. Two students will be selected from Mathews High School, based upon their talents and community activities;

—A Mathews school student art show displayed at the museum; and,

—Yellow ribbons tied around trees in Mathews County.

Warhol said the museum invites residents, after Feb. 1, to drop off a copy of photos of their military service members at the Mathews Visitor Center. These photographs will be scanned for display at the museum, located at 198 Main Street. The photos should be clearly identified with name, rank, branch of service and the conflict in which the individual served.

During May Faire, visitors will be welcomed to the museum to view the display and active duty military and retirees will be asked to sign the guest book, said added.

Warhol said the organizing committee seeks community input “in making this a very special May Faire.” Call them with suggestions or information, at mayfairemathews@gmail.com.
