A fire that started in a car in a garage in New Point on Dec. 8 burned up two cars and spread to the rest of the house, causing extensive damage. Mathews County Fire Chief Ronnie Lewis said that the owner of the home, David Ramsey, was working on the car when it caught fire. He burned his hand and later sought medical help. Ramsey was able to evacuate his child and two dogs, said Lewis. Four engines and a tanker responded to the fire, which was called out at 6:06 p.m., said Lewis. Around 25 firefighters from Mathews Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene at 6811 New Point Comfort Highway. When the first units arrived, the garage was already fully involved, he said. Personnel from Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue assisted with the fire, as well, said Lewis. He estimated the damages at $150,000.
