Progress is being made on construction of Mathews Volunteer Fire Department’s new Station 2 on East River Road at Bohannon. As of Monday, concrete had been poured and the exterior walls had been installed. Station Captain Lee Smith, who is chairman of the building committee, said installation of the roof would be next. The contract calls for completion of the building 244 days from the contract date of June 14, he said, adding, but “there’s no solid date.” Smith said that the contractor, Bush Construction of Williamsburg, is “doing an excellent job.” “We’re gonna get there,” he said. “It’s gonna be nice when it’s done.” The new building will have a dayroom, kitchen, office, two bathrooms, a shower room and two equipment bays.
