The Mathews High School cross country team continued its season this past week with another dominating performance. The squad traveled to Middlesex High School on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

The Blue Devils were prepared for the match against their rivals, the Chargers, as well as for the King William Cavaliers. The girls’ and boys’ races were conducted separately this week, unlike the season opener.

The girls’ race began first. The first female runner to cross the line completed the course in a time of 22:45, leading the Middlesex team. Abbie Hudgins led the Blue Devils for the second consecutive week, crossing the line at 23:55.

Four Mathews runners followed closely—Brittany Ottarson (25:15), Avery Betz (25:25), Jaysen Hall (25:38) and Jade Davis (26:12). King William’s first runner was next to cross the line with a time of 28:01, and two teammates close behind. Caroline Bray (30:03) and eighth grader Chelsea Lowe (34:58) finished the team scoring for Mathews. King William’s fifth runner finished the course in 35:01.

Middlesex only had three varsity runners complete the course, so they could not count towards a team score. The Blue Devils beat King William with another perfect score of 15 points to the Cavaliers’ 43.

The boys’ race followed, with conditions remaining the same. All three teams filled out a complete roster, and the Blue Devils finished in impressive fashion, going one through 10 as the lead pack crossed the line together. Calvin Kramer, Cameron Stearns, Kirk Casper, Will Hutcheson, Josh Rosadino, Aaron Miles, Nasir Thomas, Austen Wood, Isaiah Bivins and Dylan White all crossed the line with a time of 19:48.

The Cavaliers’ number-one runner finished with a time of 20:19 and the Chargers’ top runner crossed the line at 21:30. The Blue Devils had several more impressive times come in after the main pack as well. Blake Atkins (20:27), Finn Ciszewski (20:33) and eighth grader Greg Hutcheson (21:35) stayed ahead of the majority of the opposition.

Carson Brown (22:16), Brian Robinson (23:39), Presley Murphy (24:13), Solomon Hess (25:18) and Matthew Taylor (26:11) closed out the team scoring for the Blue Devils. Middlesex and King William’s fifth runners finished with times of 24:30 and 22:01, respectively

The Blue Devils came in with another 15 point perfect score. King William took second with 53 points, and Middlesex finished in third with 78 points.

The squad was scheduled to race Wednesdayat Lancaster High School and Saturday at the William and Mary Invitational, with both events have been canceled because of threats from Hurricane Florence.
