Walker caps GHS wrestling career with state title

Gloucester High School wrestlers Cameron Walker, at left, and Austin Glockner hold up the final bracket of the 5A Wrestling Championship after Walker took home the 220 lbs. weight class title in his final match as a senior. Glockner, a freshman, finished in the top eight of the 138 lbs. weight class.

Gloucester High School senior Cameron Walker has brought a 5A wrestling title home to GHS. At the state championship held at Oscar Smith High School on Feb. 16-17, Walker won all three of his preliminary matches by pin on the way to winning the 220 lbs. weight class. He stands here atop the podium.
Walker has chased his dream for the last four years, coming closer to gold each tournament leading up to this achievement. As a freshman he finished fourth in the state, sophomore year saw a third-place finish, and junior year he finished second. Now, Walker is a champion in the 220 lbs. weight class.
Walker compiled a record of 142 wins to only 12 losses in his four-year career. “Most of those losses have been to nationally ranked wrestlers, or in the state championships, making Cameron one of the most dominating wrestlers to wrestle at Gloucester High School,” said his coach, John Glockner.
Glockner gave a play-by-play account of Walker’s victory in the finals of the state championships, held on Feb. 16-17 at Oscar Smith High School:
“Cameron controlled the match through the first period, scoring multiple takedowns and taking an early lead in points. The domination continued early in the second period where Cameron scored an escape, followed by another takedown. From this position, Cameron was able to turn his opponent, and ultimately scored the pin to win his first state title.”
