First Friday

Arts on Main will host its “First Friday” event for November from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the gallery on Main Street in Gloucester. The event will feature fall scenes and seasonal colors across several media by Jason Abbott, Carolyn Thompson Dudley, Melanie Hartman, George Jennings, Harriet McGee, Rose Nygaard and Mary Montague Sikes. In addition, local duo Crimson Foxx will provide entertainment.

The annual herb farm festival, “Autumn’s Song,” will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at C.A. & J. Farms on East River Road at Foster.

The Gloucester branch of the NAACP will meet Monday at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Ordinary. The public is invited to attend.

Caroling

Caroling on the Creek, a Christmas tradition in Mathews, will be held beginning at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Town Point Landing in Mathews. Paddlers in their canoes and kayaks will stop at various docks to sing. For more information, call 757-645-6251.

The Mathews Farmers’ Market will hold a special Christmas Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the historic courthouse green. Christmas gifts, decorations, and food will be available for purchase. Stop by for a cup of hot cider.

Christmas Parade

The Mathews Christmas Parade will be held from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, beginning at Thomas Hunter Middle School on Church Street and ending at Bank of America on Buckley Hall Road. Cub Scout Pack 124 will be collecting canned and non-perishable food for Hands Across Mathews. Those planning on donating items are asked to have them in a grocery bag.

After Saturday afternoon’s Mathews Christmas Parade, Santa Claus will be available for photos from 2-5 p.m. at the Mathews County Visitor and Information Center on Main Street.

Empty Bowls

A fundraiser for Hands Across Mathews, “Empty Bowls,” will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bay School Community Arts Center on Main Street in Mathews. Sponsored by the two organizations and the Clay by the Bay Ceramics Guild, the event costs $15 for one bowl filled with soup, with bread and cookies on the side.

Gingerbread Houses

Young people ages 6-13 are invited to build gingerbread houses free of charge from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Mathews Memorial Library. Ginger cookies and hot chocolate will be served, and a prize will be given for the most creative cookie cottage. 

Rockfish Tournament

The Mathews Rotary Rockfish Tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday with registration from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the Piankatank Ruritan Club and weigh-in from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Morningstar Marina on Mill Point Road at Cricket Hill. For more information, call 804-815-9140.

The Bayside Youth Ballet will hold its Winter Gala from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Mathews High School. The company will perform Act II of “The Nutcracker, Journey to the Land of the Sweets,” as well as “Christmas with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra” and other selections. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children under 10 and will be available at the door.

The Mathews County School Board will hold a work session on its 2019-2020 budget at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Mathews High School media center. The school board’s regular monthly meeting will follow at 6. School employees are invited to make salary and fringe benefits requests for the upcoming budget at the regular meeting.

Christmas at Hyco House

Sam Forrest, owner of Hyco House, has invited the community to drop by between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Christmas Day for a community feast and small gift exchange. Paella, a haunch of venison, and turkey will be provided, but guests are asked to bring a side dish, along with a $1 gift for a gift exchange. Hyco House is located on Buckley Hall Road across from Hardee’s.
