Bohannon: Mr. J.B. White’s house came near to being burned on Thursday night of last week by the overturning of a lamp caused by a falling picture. It was extinguished in time, however, before much damage was done.
Miss Maude Minter entertained a small party at dinner on Friday evening in honor of Miss Maude Vandervort, of West Virginia.

Electric current will very soon be available to every consumer in Gloucester. Probably the first homes to have light and power will be those in the west portion of the village, the power line having already been completed to the point. An announcement concerning rates of power and light to consumers, and advertising relative to the opening of a salesroom for electrical appliances will soon appear in The Gazette, according to Mr. I.E. Dischinger, manager of the Virginia East Coast Utilities Corporation in this territory.

Mathews and Westville Baptist Churches join in series of meetings. The Rev. Floyd T. Holland, Pastor, Park Avenue Baptist Church, Norfolk, will preach beginning Monday night, Sept. 3. Joint meeting of the Mathews and Westville Baptist Churches, to be held at Mathews Baptist Church. Beginning Sunday, Sept. 2. The pastor preaching on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

A host of Young Democrats will leave Gloucester, Mathews and nearly counties Friday to join the throng from all sections of the state at the annual state convention of the Young Democratic Clubs of Virginia, to be held at Hotel John Marshall in Richmond. Entertainment features include a boat ride down the James Friday afternoon, a dance Friday night, and the annual banquet and dance Saturday night. The contest for state president between Hon. John T. DuVal of Gloucester and Robert Lane Anderson of Marion, will be the highlight of the business session.

President Truman, on his vacation cruise, headed down the Virginia Coast on the Yacht “Williamsburg” and anchored off York Spit Light in the mouth of the York River yesterday morning. The presidential party passed Gloucester Point at approximately 11:30 a.m. and proceeded up the York River to the Naval Mine Docks. The Williamsburg weighed anchor in Delaware Bay at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday and eased into the Atlantic after being delayed by fog for almost four hours. The President is said to be working on drafts of campaign speeches he will deliver in Michigan.

Twenty-six employees of Tidewater Telephone Company were presented service award pins in recognition of their years of service in the telephone industry at the seventh annual company-family picnic, held at Westmoreland State Park on Aug. 6. James S. Day, vice-president of operations, made presentations of the attractive yellow-gold octagon-shaped pins, embossed with a small telephone, following the picnic box supper; 325 persons, employees, their families and guests attended this annual summer outing.
