American Legion Post 83 members Ron Lambert, above, Jack Cranford, Morey Alexander and Ray Fleischer provided the program at the Mathews Rotary Club’s Feb. 21 breakfast meeting at the Piankatank Ruritan Club building. Rotarians were told that 2019 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the American Legion, which now has 2.4 million veterans throughout the world striving to live up to its motto, “For God and Country.” Legionnaires in nearly 14,000 posts across the world continue to help veterans and are dedicated to community service. In Mathews, Post 83 provides local scholarships, sends Mathews High School Students to Boys and Girls State, and supports many other programs related to promoting Americanism. On the first Sunday of each month the Post 83 serves its “World Famous Breakfast” to the public at their post headquarters on Hookemfair Road in Hudgins.
