Longtime Mathews Pharmacy employee Lynette Glockner, RPh, has purchased the business from former owners Christy and Wayne Brown.

The pharmacy will continue to operate as before, said Glockner. Once the transfer is complete and things have settled down, she plans to become more involved in the Mathews community, especially helping to educate the public about such issues as the opioid epidemic, how to take medications properly, and how to dispose of them properly when they’re no longer necessary.

Glockner began her pharmaceutical career in her native Ohio, working for Revco and then CVS for 18 years. She transferred to CVS in Williamsburg when she and her family moved there in 2004, and then transferred to the CVS in Kilmarnock in 2008. Shortly afterward, the family moved to Gloucester so Glockner could be closer to her work.

A year after moving to Gloucester, Glockner found out about an opening for a pharmacist at Mathews Pharmacy, and she jumped at the chance. As a CVS employee, she said, it was typical to work all weekend long for 10 to 13 hours a day. The lifestyle of an independent pharmacy was much more appealing, she said, because it allowed more time for family and for church activities, such as singing in the choir. She was able to be home to cook dinner and to be a part of after-school activities such as coaching cheerleading.

“The quality of life was much better coming here,” she said.

Not only that, the Browns “were a godsend,” said Glockner.

“They were a blessing to work for,” she said. “It truly feels like a family working here.”

Glockner and Christy Brown immediately developed a close friendship and a warm mentor/mentee relationship.

“When you think of women in pharmacy, she is definitely someone to look up to,” said Glockner, adding that Christy “has worked hard all her life,”

Glockner is a graduate of Ohio Northern University, where she earned her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy. She and her husband of 24 years (and her high school sweetheart), John Glockner, have three children—Brianna, a senior majoring in criminology at the University of Lynchburg; Kaylynn, a pre-med student at Liberty University; and Austin, a sophomore on the wrestling team at Gloucester High School.
