A Newport News man was charged after a Gloucester woman was killed Monday night in a three-vehicle hit-and-run accident in York County.
State police said a 1996 Ford Ranger and a 1998 Lincoln Town Car were traveling westbound on Denbigh Boulevard, east of Route 17, when an eastbound 2015 Chrysler 300 veered into the westbound lanes and sideswiped the two westbound vehicles. The crash occurred just before 9 p.m. Monday.
The Ranger, driven by 81-year-old Doris Jean Wright of Pine Trail in Gloucester, ran off the road and into a ditch. Wright sustained major injuries and was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital where she later died, according to state police.
The Lincoln spun out of control and came to rest in the roadway, state police said, and the driver of the Chrysler 300 ran off the road into a ditch and fled the scene on foot. Newport News Police K-9 units were called to the scene to assist in tracking the Chrysler driver but were unsuccessful.
