Stringer won the only singles match for the Dukes Tuesday, defeating the Blue Devils’ number one seed Jennifer Ratliff, 8-0, in a pro set. GHS second and third seeds Britni Edwards and Gretchen Wyco battled hard but each went down, 8-6. Freshman Alyssa Weakland also made a strong showing at number four but lost, 8-5.
The Dukes rallied to win in doubles, taking the number one and two spots. Stringer and Wyco, who had not combined before, clicked well and took an 8-4 victory. Edwards and Weakland, also a new team, took the number two doubles in a tight 9-7 match.
Gloucester coach Robie Thompson said she was pleasantly surprised and proud of how well all the girls played in the non-district match. “This is a building year for us, but with hard work and practice, this team shows a lot of heart and promise,” Thompson said.
The Lady Dukes play at Phoebus today and host Hampton on Tuesday. ...
