Driver in fatal accident charged with involuntary DUI manslaughter

The driver involved in a fatal single-vehicle accident last month in Gloucester has been charged with involuntary DUI manslaughter. 

Jiree Dequayne Burrell, 24, of Gloucester was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer eastbound on Route 14 just east of Gloucester’s Main Street on March 25 when he lost control, ran off the roadway and overcorrected, according to state police.

The vehicle overturned several times and ejected a backseat passenger, Tremayne Reyeshawn Safewright, who was not wearing a seatbelt. State police said Safewright, 26, of Newport News was flown to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Burrell sustained serious injuries in the crash and was also transported to Riverside Regional. Last Thursday, Burrell was arrested and charged with unintentionally causing the death of Safewright as a result of driving while under the influence.
