Biden campaign gets boost with Virginia win in Democratic primary

Virginians gave former Vice President Joe Biden a big win in Tuesday’s Democratic presidential primary, winning over half of the 1.3 million-plus votes cast statewide. Local results mirrored those of the Commonwealth as a whole, with Biden winning Gloucester with 54.06 percent of the votes cast and the percentage was somewhat higher in Mathews County, with Biden getting 55.63 percent of the vote. Senator Bernie Sanders polled second in the two counties, garnering 22.77 percent of Gloucester’s vote and 19.3 percent of the Mathews vote. Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg did somewhat better locally than he did statewide, placing third in both Mathews (12.17 percent) and Gloucester (10.26 percent) counties. Statewide, Bloomberg came in fourth with 9.66 percent of the vote, where he was edged out by Senator Elizabeth Warren with 10.77 percent.
